Ordered skis on Feb 6. "In stock" Got the email confirmation shortly thereafter. Nothing. Saturday: I call. "We lost your order. New inventory system. The distributor shows one pair in stock. I'll make sure you get that, plus a 10% discount for your trouble." Monday: Got an "Order cancelled" email. No call. No apology. No explanation. Tue: I call. "Sorry. No more skis in stock. We did, in fact, cancel your order." Thanks Mountaingear.com! Fortunately, Second Ascent came through with a pair. Should have purchased there first, but I'd already ordered from Mountaingear, so I thought I'd stay with that order. Too bad MG doesn't afford their customers the same respect and consideration.

They are a strange outfit. In the past I recall their "free shipping" excluding anything on sale - I never found a compelling reason to shop online there if I had to pay shipping and WA sales tax.

$250 off retail seemed to be a good reason to shop there. Unfortunately, they lost the order. Then they ran out. Then they told me they hadn't run out, and everything was on track. Then they cancelled my order without explanation or any form of personal notification. Lesson learned. Really shoddy outfit. Avoid.

Backcountry.com seems like a great outfit. Friendly knowledgeable staff on the phones as well. Altrec.com also does a good job. Both offer no tax, free shipping, and a 100% guaranteed return policy. Don't forget to use FatWallet.com when ordering from either.

Did altrec stop charging WA sales tax? This web page states they charge WA duty: http://www.altrec.com/helpdesk/order.tax/static.htm

Damn. Nope, you're right. Mea culpa... Backcountry's the place to be, then...

I have had good results with backcountry.com.

I've bought from everybody at this point and never had a problem like this. A few minor snafus here and there.

Campsaver.com out of Utah also charges no sales tax and seems to be right on top of customer service.

I bought my splitboarding bindings from MGear because they were the only ones who had them in my size at the time. Included in the package was a Schick razor. No kidding. I've gotten free granola bar samples with gear packages before, but never a razor. It was weirdly random.

I got a very friendly message and apology from Paul Fish, President of Mountaingear yesterday. He's aware of these issues and they are working to rectify them through training, etc. We had a nice, productive exchange. That's all you can ask of anyone, so I'm good with it. End of rant. Pat

I'm curious did he see/hear about the negativity on NWhikers and contact you or how did that conversation come about?

Interestingly enough, our (nwhikers) newest member is Paul Fish. Coincidence?

Given his website is mountaingear.com, I think not.

I'm good with that. I'd much rather have a responsive or proactive business than one that simply ignores an issue and hopes it goes away. Shows some measure of concern / care.
