mm. we're driving from about five hours away (Portland metro) that am because there is no camping available in the area the night before. I guess we stop at quinault to register and get permit?

You can get your permit online through rec.gov. But if you want a bear can, you'll need to stop at Quinault. As for camping the night before, there's a small DNR campground along the Hoh River Rd just outside the park called Minnie Peterson, which is first-come, first-served. You'll need to buy a Discover Pass ahead of time. There's also Cottonwood Campground along the Hoh, right off 101.
