I spent a magnificent day yesterday in Ohio's Hocking Hills. It rained constantly, but that was exactly what I'd been looking for, because that meant that every waterfall was at near peak flow.
Cedar Falls
One of my favorite waterfalls.
Ash Cave
100ft deep, 90ft tall and 700ft long; this is the largest recess cave in the eastern United States.
Old Man's Cave complex

Love the pictures. How do you discover these hidden gems? As a photographer, I am curious how you do location scouting. I assume a lot of pre-visualization and planning goes on before you travel to a site.

Some of it looks more like Utah. My brother is in Ohio. He'd been raving about Hocking Hills for years before I finally got a chance to visit with him. I was very impressed.

I've also always thought it looked similar to Utah. The only difference is that it's more wooded, so the features get hidden somewhat. Note: the tallest hemlocks in Ohio are found there.

Yes, for a new place I do a fair bit of research before I go there. Check it on maps, including satellite imagery, and see if a sunset or sunrise works better. I also try and see photos on the web to get an idea of what I should expect. Obviously, I still want to put my own spin on things.
In this case, I've made multiple trips of Hocking Hills in the past, so am quite familiar with it. (Despite that, I'd never been to Broken Rock Falls before, so that was a nice surprise.) The challenge here is to try and get a different take on things, which I managed with some of the shots. I also needed to pick the rainiest possible day in which to go there, because some of the waterfalls can dry up.
