The physical differences between mountain and beach hikes are obvious. And so too the mind dichotomy. Mountains are about the ‘right now’. No yesterdays or tomorrows when grinding up a slope, scrambling or climbing a peak. You’re more focused, and elemental concerns which never register in your daily life – like water sources, where to sleep and breathing - now occupy your thoughts. Conversely, beach walks favor reflection. A slow pace and nothing but time can be good or bad depending on where you’re at mentally. Because the general scenery doesn’t change much, you tend to notice things like odd shapes, patterns and abstract designs. Add in the hypnotic roar of the surf, overcast skies and some wind and one can spend a whole afternoon very busy going nowhere.

Nice text, dude. up.gif Not that the photos suck, or anything, but really, really nice text. Headed to the coast tomorrow with my brother. Not sure I'll be able to create an elegant, flowing trip report such as yours; indeed - the only thing my brother wanted to ensure about our packing plans was that I have an appropriately sized cooler for the beer. embarassedlaugh.gif

All,

I often time my ocean excursions to Westport around low tides to ride my mountain bike on the hard pack. Great fun. I usually camp at Twin Harbors State Park, ride into town on the road, hit the beach at Westhaven State Park, and ride downwind back to the campground. Warning: Tis hell on the bike though...lots of grit and salt water. Tom
