Deer falls trail is just a short .50 mile hike downhill until it hooks up with Owyhigh Lakes Trail. It is accessed via Hwy 123. I was just there a few weekends ago. They should be searching the correct route.
I have been studying the map on this quite a bit. Not having hiked that particular trail, I am assuming the MRNP calls the entire trail from Chinook Creek and Deer Creek Falls junction (below Hwy 123) all the way up to Owyhigh Lakes and beyond to White River as the Owyhigh Lakes Trail. This trail that Karen and her partner were on follows up Kotsuck Creek and switchbacks below Buell Peak and Barrier Peak up to a wide pass south of the lakes. Maybe Joey could post us a map image. Meanwhile you can do a search on Gmap4 for Owyhigh Lakes, WA. The second drop down allows several map choices. T4 has a great topo with trails and named locations. Once you locate the trail, you can switch back and forth to Satellite view and see how densely forested some of the trail is. Note: for some reason the lake is misspelled on the initial map (Owhigh), but the search will put you in the vicinity. Then the topo (t4) is correct. ~z

I've been looking at the map myself. The lakes are at the very top of this map.

I always find the slope shading on caltopo very useful in understanding the terrain. Here is the area that Joey also linked to: http://caltopo.com/map.html#ll=46.84904,-121.56616&z=15&b=t&a=sf It's curious that the terrain doesn't look all that steep frown.gif. Hope she is okay.

Let's all keep good thoughts and up.gif up.gif up.gif for Karen. She's one of the good guys. I just learned of this, and suddenly my day has taken a decidedly poor turn. Karen had, a few years ago, suggested I could show her the Taneum trail I used to talk about. I'm hoping hard the opportunity will be just over the horizon...

I was looking for a good backpacking a couple years ago, and it was Karen who suggested Cutthroat Lakes. I've since forgiven her, and I am keeping my fingers crossed for some good news.

I too just learned about this. I certainly hope she returns safely. She's always been a peaceful presence on here and I've enjoyed her posts. Prayers for her safe return.

I am sending my strongest best wishes. Her wildflower hike book; co-authored with Professor Kruckeberg and Craig Romano, is my go to book for hiking ideas.

Oh no, just learned about this on Craig Romano's Facebook page. I don't know Karen otherother than from the forums, she seems like such a lovely person. Thinking positive thoughts they find her soon.

Who was Karen's hiking companion on this hike? As Tom Cruise said in the Top Gun movie "Never leave your wing-man" or in this case "Never Leave Your Wing-Woman".

From Kiro 7 Sykes and her boyfriend were hiking the 8-mile Owyhigh Lakes Trail when they reached snow at about 4,500 to 5,000 feet at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Her boyfriend wasn’t experienced in hiking in the snow, so Sykes went alone, but failed to return. Her boyfriend reported her as missing to Mount Rainier National Park at 10:30 p.m. ** I cannot stop checking the news and this forum. I anxiously await some good news. She has been on my mind all day since I heard about this. I don't know Karen but have read most of her excellent trip reports for Mt. Rainier.
